Leo Carlton Headwear

Leo Carlton
Leo Carlton is a Headwear and Fashion Artefact designer, here showcasing their first steps into finding and using greener methods of production and design than those applied within the contemporary millinery market.

The headpieces on display are all 3D printed PLA (polyactic acid) filament made from fermented plant starches that are biodegradable. Each headpiece was designed using 3D software and developed in virtual reality using Oculus Rift.

3D Printing opens a door for alternative means of production and consumption that could be incorporated more into our manufacturing sectors. From international file share to a demand and then supply chain, this method challenges the existing position of millinery, craft and the hugely damaging working model of the fashion industry as a whole.

The virtual plane allows Leo to purge ideas and test forms, stability and bespoke sizing, before even touching the raw material. Visualising a world where hats can inhabit both contemporary and domestic spaces, Leo is collaborating with their 3D printer and growing headpieces for the evolving consumer.

Graduating from Cordwainers, LCF in 2014, Leo worked at Stephen Jones Millinery for four years and has since collaborated with many other creatives, including Charles Jeffrey, Dilara Findikoglu, Richard Quinn, Paolina Russo, Tim Walker, Hungry. Leo has shown at Paris Premiere Classe and London Fashion Week On/Off, was a finalist at International Talent Support, and has been featured in Another Man magazine, British Vogue, Vogue Italia and LOVE magazine.

Leo is a former studio tenant and alumni of the Sarabande Foundation, the charity established by the late designer Lee Alexander McQueen.
