Huishan Zhang was born in Qingdao, China.
After leaving his hometown at 17, Huishan spent time in New Zealand and Paris, before moving to London where he studied at the prestigious Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. During his studies, Zhang was hand picked by Delphine Arnault to spend his third year working in the House of Dior - Paris, working in leather goods and Dior’s Haute Couture Atelier. Huishan returned to London where he graduated in 2010 with a BA Honours and MA in Pattern cutting.
As a Chinese-born, London based designer, Huishan has mapped out his signature style, finding inspiration and direction through his national identity. Creating a luxurious brand where Eastern heritage meets Western influences, his collections create a romantic, sophisticated and ageless philosophy with feminine details, strong lines and directional design.
Prestigious stockists, Browns and Joyce picked up Huishan Zhang’s first collection. By his second season, London V&A Museum had selected his couture ‘Dragon Dress’ to become a permanent piece in the T.T. Tsui Gallery - making him the first Chinese contemporary fashion designer to receive this honour. Continuing this success, Huishan was awarded ‘Chinese Designer of The Year’ by Numero China in 2012. Going into Spring/Summer 2014 Huishan Zhang won the iconic Dorchester Fashion Prize and the collection was picked up by Barney’s USA.
September 2012 saw Huishan make his London Fashion Week debut, supported by the British Fashion Council and the Newgen Scheme. Huishan has since become a regular feature on the LFW Schedule with continued support from key press and editorials such as WWD, Vogue China, Harpers Bazaar, Elle and BOF. Huishan’s business continues to grow organically in the direction of VIP Dressing with supporters such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Keira Knightley, Helen Mirren, Amelia Dornan, Naomi Campbell and Samantha Cameron wearing his collections. In 2014 and 2015, Huishan was named in the BOF 500 as one of the people who are shaping the Global Fashion Industry. In October, he was awarded the International Chinese Designer of the Year at the Elle China Style Awards 2014. Huishan was nominated to the shortlist of finalists for the LVMH Prize 2015. In 2016 Huishan was a recipient of the BFC Fashion Trust.
His collections are stocked worldwide at stores including Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys, Joyce, Harvey Nichols, Browns, and Moda Operandi, amongst others.
